A little about Susan...

I love playing the harp.

I fell in love with the instrument at my very first lesson and haven't stopped since. My first professional harp jobs were playing for my older sister's friends'  weddings while I was still in high school and since that time I have enjoyed helping to make a couple's day the best it can be. While in my teens I had the thrill of playing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Later, as I continued to play solo harp for more corporate events, weddings and memorials I found that I simply enjoy providing lovely and affordable live harp music at all types of occasions. I particularly enjoy accommodating special requests for pop music.

My professional career has spanned several states from Texas to Washington, with the majority of my career in the Chicago area playing for venues such as The Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue, The McCormick Convention Center at their grand opening, The Shedd Aquarium, The Four Seasons and numerous other locations.  I have also performed on stage for orchestras with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Jr., Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Jordan Smith (from The Voice), Peabo Bryson, Anita Baker, Jeffrey Osborne and Roberta Flack.  Although the majority of my work is solo, I have performed both live and in studio recordings with small ensembles, can accompany a vocalist of your choosing, and offer a unique cello/harp duo.  The warm, melodic tones of the cello are amazingly beautiful when paired with the harp.  To view an example of one of our cello harp duo weddings click here.  If you want to arrange a unique ensemble with harp please contact me for ideas.

In Western Washington I have performed for audiences at literally hundreds of venues such as the Olympic Sculpture Garden Park, Chihuly Garden and Glass, The Space Needle, The Fairmont Olympic, The Arctic Ballroom, DeLille Cellars, The Heathman Hotel, The Woodmark, McCaw Hall and The Columbia Tower Club to name just a few since my move to the Seattle and Tacoma area in 2002.

I served on the Board of Officers for the Seattle Chapter of The American Harp Society.

I am the proud owner of three harps, but the one you see pictured on this website is the one I travel with for special events.  It is a one of a kind Lyon and Healy style 100 in ebony and gold.  Two smaller harps, a maple Lyon and Healy Troubadour and a smaller  natural birds eye maple "lap harp" accompany me to hospitals and hospices for easily transportable healing music for patients and their families.  I also play a Camac Baby Blue Electric harp with a special repertoire, some which appears on the Playlist page where noted as "electric".

In my home I maintain an active harp and piano teaching studio to help make "making music" fun for all ages.  The Puget Sound area of Washington is my current home.  "Have harp will travel" is a common motto of mine and I travel all over the Seattle and Tacoma region to play both indoor and outdoor venues. I offer free consultations in my home for anyone planning an event who would like to hear my harp music live and/or needs help in making musical selections.

My training was with Julia Hermann Edwards at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Gail Horne Barrington at The University of Texas at Austin.  Over the years, I have participated in master classes and workshops with internationally recognized harpists such as Deborah Henson-Conant, Paul Baker, Stella Castellucci, Alfredo Rolando Ortiz and Mildred Dilling to keep my skills current.
